How to Paint Your Tiles at Home?

Do you want to replace your old, out of date tile flooring but don’t have that much time, money or energy? Well, worry no more because we’ve got you covered. With a fresh coat of paint, you can colour your tiles to rejuvenate your ancient tiles and give your room a completely different look altogether.

Requirements

The basic requirements before you can start your painting are:

    • Light sandpaper (to remove dirt from tiles)

    • Paint (can be floor, tiles, or epoxy paint)

    • Primer (depending upon the paint used)

    • Painter’s tape

    • Paint roller

    • Paint pan

    • Polyurethane (if needed)

Process

First and foremost, before beginning the painting, make sure the tiles are in good condition. If they’re damaged, worn out or disintegrating, colouring them may not be the best thing to do.

    1. It is essential to ensure that the tiles are dry and clean without any dirt or debris because painting over dirt will cause the dust particles to get trapped and stain your new paint.

    2. Using 220 grit sandpaper, rub the tiles softly to remove any dust particles that might be there. When you’re finished, make sure to wipe and dry the area again to ensure that all the grit has been gone.

    3. Use painter’s tape to tape off any neighbouring rooms, appliances, showpieces or furniture to protect them from accidental colour splashes or oversteps while using your paint roller.

    4. Check the label on your paint container to see if priming is required. You can go for epoxy paint because it doesn’t usually need priming, and the paint is made in such a manner that it sticks to the tile. Primer may be required for other floor and tile paints. If you’re not sure, go with care and use the primer in the required area.

    5. If you’re using a primer, use a roller to apply a light layer to the floor, starting at the farthest point of the room. Give it enough time to allow the primer to dry before applying the second layer of primer. Finally, let the second layer dry as well.

    6. You are now all set to start painting your tiles. With your roller, apply the paint evenly across the tiles. Make sure it’s thoroughly dry before continuing.

    7. Now you can decorate the tile with various stencils or intricate custom patterns, or whatever you want to decorate your tiles with. Before stepping on it or bringing any furniture back in, let the paint dry for at least 24 to 48 hours until it is completely dry.

    8. You can also add a layer of polyurethane if you want. This not only preserves the surface of the paint but also improve its appearance and durability.

Before You Go

Now you know how to paint your tiles, and isn’t it the easiest? Just a small tip, if you are using epoxy or tile paint, ensure that the area is quite well ventilated. Moreover, wear paint masks and other necessary protective gear.
